Tour of Taste (9) : Mexico

Do you think you know Mexican food? So gringos, here is the list of the popular Mexican dishes or foods that you MUST try if you ever come to Mexico. Hope you like it!

Chilaquiles

Hey all, this is probably your equivalent to “nachos.” Only without the beans and american cheese and pretty much everything you are used to. You have got toasted tortillas covered in green or red salsa, shredded chicken, and a little crema (kind-of like sour cream). Mmmm! It will rock your tongue.

Esquites/Elotes

Esquites are a delicious snack that you can buy on the street. It’s a piping hot cup of maiz (a lot like corn, but chewier here) with epazote spice, mayonaise, lots of lime, and chile. It is heavenly if eating ezsquites while walking through a scenic plaza at night.

Tacos Arabes

To make tacos arabes, the meat is cooked and shaved off a spit and then seasoned it. These are some of the only tacos that you can eat that are served in a pita or a flour tortilla (corn tortillas are the norm). The city of Puebla is famous with delicious tacos arabes.

Torta Cubana

There are many types of tortas available at Mexico. All of them usually have a bean spread, avocados and a little mayo. The Torta Cubana also called as “Cuban Sandwich”, and it basically means that every kind of meat that you can think of is on this sandwich, and usually some thick pickles but it is only for people with a big appetite!

Tacos Campechanos

This is a “country style” of taco that it is acceptable to put almost anything on it and mixed together. It’s got a mixture of many types of meats, including Mexican chorizo (sausage) and you can put different veggies, including nopales or cactus, mashed potatoes and salsa. Just put a little salt and lime on them… and Mmmmmmm!!!

Enchiladas Verdes

“Enchilada” means something something covered in chile. Green Enchiladas are corn tortillas stuffed with shredded chicken and smothered in green salsa with a little crema and a sprinkling of white cheese. It sounds simple but delicious.

Pozole

It’s actually a very old dish passed down from Pre-Columbian tradition in Mexico. It’s made from hominy and stewed for hours with chicken, pork, or other type of meat. You can dish it up and put lettuce, radish, onion, lime, oregano, and chile on it after everything has been cooked and simmered for hours. It can be clear broth, green (with green mole) or red and spicy!

Tamales

Tamales can be wrapped inside bananna leaves or corn husks. They are more commonly wrapped inside corn husks and contain a mixture of corn dough and filling that tastes either sweet, meaty, or spicy. There are tamales that taste like pineapples, green salsa with chicken, chorizo (sausage), and some that are sweet and pink, like desserts. The best ones are sold on the street, maybe accompanied by the famous tape and loudspeaker, “Tamales Oaxaquenos!”

Atole

The tamale vendors may also sell “atole,” which is a popular beverage made from the by-products of tamale production: cornstarch. It is usually flavored also, and it can taste a little like hot chocolate.
